Frequently asked
What counts as a "user"?
A user is any person with an account in your organization — Owner, Admin, or User role. Service accounts or automation that only calls the agent API do not count.
What counts as a "server"?
A server is any machine that has completed enrollment and holds an active identity in the control plane. Disabled servers do not count toward your limit. The count is taken at billing time, not at peak.
What happens when I hit the user or server limit?
You cannot add new users or enroll new servers until you upgrade or free up a slot. Existing users and servers continue to work without interruption — no access is revoked and no data is lost.
Does the free tier expire?
No. The free tier is free indefinitely. It is not a trial — there is no deadline.
How does self-hosting work on the Business tier?
On Business, you can run the control plane on your own infrastructure instead of using the Ephera cloud. You get the same feature set with your data staying entirely on your side. The agent and CLI are Apache 2.0 and always self-hosted — this option covers the control plane.
Can I switch between cloud-hosted and self-hosted?
Yes. Contact support and we will walk you through the migration. Data export is always available regardless of tier so you are never locked in.
